Delta variant of covid-19 is as contagious as chicken pox, research says

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out that the delta variant of covid-19 is more contagious than other strains and is more likely to cause severe disease variations. The information was disclosed in an internal agency presentation.

The research also says that the delta variant of covid-19 is more transmissible than viruses that cause MERS, SARS, Ebola, common cold, seasonal flu and smallpox. Plus, it's just as contagious as chicken pox.

The new acceleration of the pandemic registered around the planet has Southeast Asia as a major protagonist, with a 30% increase in deaths in the last week. “The delta variant is spreading rapidly across all continents and has already reached all countries,” reports WHO. "The strain will be dominant globally and will continue to spread in the coming months, unless a new, more competitive virus emerges," completed WHO director in Europe, Hans Henri Kluge, last Tuesday (27).

Delta infection may also be more likely to bypass vaccine protections and lead to more serious conditions, the document noted. Studies Canada and Scotland have found that people infected with it are more likely to be hospitalized, while surveys in Singapore indicate they are more likely to need oxygen.

Still, the CDC emphasizes that vaccination is highly effective in preventing severe forms of covid-19. "Overall, delta is the problematic variant that we already knew it was," said John Moore, a virologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. "But the sky isn't falling and vaccination still strongly protects against the worst outcomes."

Delta variant does not let you relax

Brazil registered, yesterday (29), 1,318 more deaths as a result of covid-19 in 24 hours. With the addition, the country reached 554,497 victims of the virus. In the same period, 42,283 new cases were recorded, totaling 19,839,369 since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020.

In Brazil, the WHO warns that the strain should become dominant in the coming weeks. However, Brazilian authorities once again ignore the warnings and suspend the already inefficient protection measures. In São Paulo, for example, Governor João Doria (PSDB) announced the end of all restrictions for August 17th.

Scientist Miguel Nicolelis reinforces that the delta variant is transmissible than the common flu and will have a huge impact on the Brazilian population. “More than 71,000 cases in the last 24 hours in the US. We need to prepare for a possible new explosion of cases in Brazil for this variant”, he said on his Twitter profile.

Scientist and epidemiologist Denise Garrett emphasized that this is not the time to relax any restriction measure. She claims that vaccines continue to protect, but the delta has "devastating potential" among the unvaccinated.

“The pandemic among the unvaccinated is leading to an increase in breakthroughs (infection among the fully vaccinated) and transmission can increase even in vaccinated communities. With the low vaccination coverage in Brazil, only the vaccines will not hold the delta. Non-pharmacological measures to reduce transmission are essential. Let's try to get through this delta wave with as little damage as possible,” she added.
